There are a number of dedicated programs for caregivers, a career with great present and projected future demand in Canada.
Caring for Children Pathway
This is for caregivers who have provided child care in a home. To be eligible, the main requirements are:
- At least 24 months of full-time work experience in Canada as a home child care provider in the last four years (48 months) before you apply
- Language ability in English or French for speaking, reading, listening and writing
- Post-secondary education credential from a program at least one year in length
Caring for People with High Medical Needs Pathway
This is for caregivers who have provided care for the elderly or those with disabilities or chronic disease in a health facility or in a home. To be eligible, the key requirements are:
- At least 24 months full-time work experience in Canada in the last four years (48 months) before you apply
- Prove that you meet the requirements (education, training and other qualifications) of the job for which you are claiming work experience
- Language ability in English or French for speaking, reading, listening and writing
- Post-secondary education credential from a program at least one year in length
Live-in Caregiver Program
This is a pathway to permanent residence for live-in caregivers who are already working in Canada with a Live-in Caregiver Program work permit. To be eligible, the key requirements are:
- A positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA)
- A written contract with your future employer, signed by you and the employer
- Successful completion of the equivalent of a Canadian secondary school education
- At least six months training or at least one year of full-time paid work experience (including six months with one employer) as a caregiver or in a related field or occupation in the past three years
- Good knowledge of English or French
- A work permit before entering Canada
